    Great progress has been made in the clinical care and health outcomes for children, adolescents, and adults with type 1 diabetes since the discovery of insulin almost a century ago. Despite this progress, commonly accepted metrics of care such as severe hypoglycemia,1 diabetic ketoacidosis,2 and hemoglobin A1c3,4 remain much too high. Multiple international registry studies suggest that, on average, people with T1D have lifespans that are 7-13 years shorter than the general population and that cardiovascular disease remains the leading cause of death in people with T1D.
