    Asthma is a chronic respiratory disease characterised by reversible airflow obstruction, with periods of relative control and episodes of deterioration referred to as exacerbations. Exacerbations range in severity from mild to life-threatening and may require emergency department management and brief hospitalisations. Although rare, admissions to intensive care, mechanical ventilation and deaths from severe acute asthma exacerbations do still occur.
